Steve Metcalf

Steve Metcalf was born in Raleigh, North Carolina where he began his studies under the tutelage of North Carolina Symphony member Craig Brown. Metcalf went on to attend Indiana University under the instruction of Professor Emeritus, Lawrence Hurst, where he received his Bachelor's of Music and the coveted Performer’s Certificate. Upon graduating from Indiana, Metcalf moved to Los Angeles to continue his graduate studies with Peter Lloyd at the Colburn Conservatory, where he received a Professional Studies Certificate. Previously, Metcalf served as principal bassist of the New York String Orchestra Seminar at Carnegie Hall in 2009 and 2010, attended the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, Music Academy of the West and the Spoleto Festival. In the fall of 2017, Metcalf taught adjunctly at the University of Colorado Boulder. Most recently, Metcalf made his solo debut with the Colorado Symphony in 2019 performing Bottesini’s Passione Amorosa with assistant principal bassist Nicholas Recuber. He has been principal double bassist of the Colorado Symphony since February 2017. In his free time, Metcalf likes to enjoy the merits of living in Colorado, which include traditional climbing, backcountry skiing and running ultramarathons.
